* It was originally known as Sextilis in Latin , mainly named so as it was the sixth month of the original ten-month Roman calendar in 753 BC under Romulus[one of the founder of Rome].

* In 8 BC it was renamed in honor of Augustus.

* In the United States, August is National Goat Cheese Month

* In many European countries, August is the holiday month for most workers

* And Yes Am not forgetting 1947, 15th August - Indian Independence day.

To add about August, for South-Indian married girls/women, it is a taxing month, coinciding with 'Shravana-masa' with a demanding series of poojas and festivals and the like!!! I usually dread this month, he he :)
