SUPW - Socially useful and productive work!
Say primary school or exams - it brings back memories of lot of fun filled activities along with the normal syllabus. Languages, Basic math,science and social studies are the ones included in the normal stream. The ones out of this are - General Knowledge, moral science, story telling, project work - these become the building block for a child's growth in a complete way.
Last week an evening as I returned home, a neighbour's kid was waiting for me the enitre afternoon for help.He needed guidance to complete his project work. The school had come up with a concept to bring the creativity out of a child's mind.It goes this way - use the waste materials and create something useful - Socially useful and productive work(SUPW).
SUPW is another learning area falling under the non-scholatic domain - This ensures that the students develop better understanding of their social and environmental issues. It also encourages students to take up varities of activities,which are productive and useful.
I being an indvidulal inclined to crafts/painting and other artistic creativity, readily agreed to help the young lad.
Asked the kid of his interests and what he wanted to make. He had made up his mind of what items he would use but was not sure what he wanted to make. He carried an old plastic water bottle in one hand and had a few meters of brown twine.
My brain thought for a few minutes and came up with the idea of making a beautiful container which can be used as a pen stand or a vase that can hold few flowers.
We started off with the project and was satisfied with the end product. Here is what we did.
First, we had fun with the pull and push of hack-saw blade to cut the plastic bottle to remove the cone shaped top.
We decided to use only the bottom cyclindrical part. Next asked the kid to play with the glue(used fevicol). As he smeared the outer surface of the bottle I started placing the twine on it in circles going round and round. This was done till the
entire bottle was covered with the brown twine.
The step after this was to glue a few old white buttons on the top of this container.
Water paint - It'd been a long time since I painted using the color pallets and here I was holding the brush.
Made the outlines of the colors that needed to go in - blue, red and yellow. He made the strokes and splashes.
Final product was what you see below.
I had a great time working on this small project. It was not a bad one I guess.
